Stand True and Faithful + 7 Habits

There is wonderful truth in the reading for this week. The really interesting thing for me this week was reflecting on the past 25 years of learning and applying these principles in my life.  First: Stand True and Faithful. When President Hinckley delivered this talk, I was a new mom and pretty much a newly wed. I remember this talk. It was powerful then, but it has deeper meaning and power in my life now as I reflect back on my mothering and marriage and life. Pres. Hinckley pleas with the young women to stand true- to be true to who they are. He admonishes them to be faithful. And he does it with sincere and straightforward words. I always appreciated that about his talks. He also delivered them with so much love.  This is a message that is not only applicable today, but needs to be heard by this generation. Several of my friends who are moms of teenagers, as well as our YW and their parents. I have observed that there is a lot of "casual obedience" amongst the y...

Five Keys of Mastery

I am really enjoying the reading in the book Mastery. The principle of mastery is one that I have been building on throughout my life, but this book is putting it in context for me in a way that seems manageable and helps me to wrap my mind around it better. The five Keys of Mastery are principles that I hope to make more concrete in my mind and in my life as I endeavor to master being a wife, mom, grandma (in the future), sister, student, disciple, etc. Five Keys of Mastery: Instruction  Practice Surrender Intentionality The Edge These are so helpful to me in creating a path to mastery in earning my college degree, in photography, being a better partner with my husband and strengthening my family/children. Those are my main focuses and drives right now in my life. I loved the reminders to stay focused on the Lord. I really loved some of the quotes that Elder Tanner put into his talk.  The Key of intentionality in the book was one that I haven't thought about...

Week 5: A Heroes Journey

Mastery is a concept and principle I have been chasing for my whole life. I think I have had some progress over the years in some areas, but still working on it in many other areas. I am enjoying reading this book, Mastery by George Leonard. It has helped to give me a fresh perspective on what I can do to progress in mastering my weaknesses. I especially loved the introduction. It was a bit of a paradigm shift for me. To think that we have mastered so much already in our lives. Going from being a completely helpless infant to a fully physically functioning and thinking adult. God designed us this way. He made us to be able to master many skills - some without even consciously realizing it. That is amazing. "Start with something simple. Try touching your forehead with your hand.  An, that's easy, automatic. Nothing to it. But there was a time when you were as far removed from the mastery of that simple skill as a non pianist is from playing a Beethoven sonata. First, you...

Week 4: Personal Constitution and Mentors

I loved reading the book, The Ministry of Business. In many ways it is a thesis for my way of applying Gospel principles in my life. Two of my favorite parts were the sections on the Personal Constitution and importance of mentors in our lives. It was great to think on and work on my own personal constitution during the week. If we were truly following Steve's formula for the personal constitution, we would be pondering on it for a couple of weeks. I will still do that on my own. Ponder and edit the thoughts I have written down. However, one thing that we didn't focus on this week was the idea of mentors. I got pretty excited while I was reading about that. I had a flood of thoughts of those who have been mentors in my life. Some of them had not been considered mentors by me. But the more I thought about the concept, the more I realized how many mentors I have had in my life. So, I would like to take a little space this entry to list some of those who have mentored my in my...

Week 3 - Honesty & Business Ethics

I loved this week's reading so much. I am inspired by the principles and lessons that I learned this week. I was listening to General Conference today and was amazed at how many of the messages coordinated with our reading this week.  I was most affected by "True Blue, Through and Through". I loved every bit of the message about integrity and how important it is in our lives. As I read this quote- “If you need someone who will have the courage and determination too face the world at its worst, her am I, send me. If you need husbands and wives who will be faithful to each other, raise their children in admonition of the Lord, and defend the family, here am I, send me. If you need men and women who will see through the lies of the world about family and gender and intimacy, and who will never confuse being tolerant of others with tolerating sin, here am I, send me. If you need men and women who can think straight in a confused, twisted world, here am I, send m...

Entrepreneurial Journal - Week 2: Randy Pausch

Entrepreneurial Journal – Week 2 §   Why do you think Randy Pausch was able to achieve so many of his childhood dreams? Randy never gave up or lost sight of any of his dreams. He was clever as he worked on achieving them. In a way, he made the event of his dreams fit into his childhood size dreams. Like his football NFL dream – realizing that he had learned what he needed to from the football experiences that he did have. He had great ethical guardrails to keep him in the bounds of giving and serving humanity on his path to achieving his dreams. §   Do you feel that dreaming is important? Why or why not? Dreaming is what makes life have depth and color. As long as we remember that it is the people along the journey that matter most, then dreaming is an amazing skill and gift. It is important to help us to be hopeful and have inspiration to move along the way. §   Discuss at least one of your childhood dreams. Explain why you believe you can or cannot achi...
