Week 4: Personal Constitution and Mentors
I loved reading the book, The Ministry of Business. In many ways it is a thesis for my way of applying Gospel principles in my life. Two of my favorite parts were the sections on the Personal Constitution and importance of mentors in our lives.
It was great to think on and work on my own personal constitution during the week. If we were truly following Steve's formula for the personal constitution, we would be pondering on it for a couple of weeks. I will still do that on my own. Ponder and edit the thoughts I have written down.
However, one thing that we didn't focus on this week was the idea of mentors. I got pretty excited while I was reading about that. I had a flood of thoughts of those who have been mentors in my life. Some of them had not been considered mentors by me. But the more I thought about the concept, the more I realized how many mentors I have had in my life. So, I would like to take a little space this entry to list some of those who have mentored my in my life. I am sure there will be many more than I will list this entry, but I want to keep it an ongoing thing. I really can see the value that it has added over the course of my life and especially see that it can be a key ingredient to helping me through the rest of my life.
Some of the key mentors in my life:
My husband, Scott. The very best man I know. He has taught me how to reason and think about life on a deeper level. He has taught me by example how to use the Atonement of Jesus Christ in my life. How to depend on the Savior and give over the things that feel so overwhelming sometimes. He teaches me by example how to be more patient and loving. He has taught me one of the most important lessons of my life - to see the best in others and to love unconditionally. He has loved me unconditionally. I love deeper and more comprehensively because I love him that way. He is easy to love. He's my favorite.
My son, Matthew. (I have so much to say for each one, but for this entry I will keep it short). Matt has taught me how to let things roll off my back. How to stay calm and collected when someone is being a turkey. He teaches me so much. But I'll focus on a main mentor quality from her on out.
My son, Tyler. He is a great mentor on focus and drive. He has taught me that having dreams and goals is noble and healthy. That they can be achieved and even surpassed. He has mentored me on mind over body.
My daughter, Brittany. This young lady has mentored me on many things. But focusing on one outstanding attribute, I'd have to say that she has been an amazing mentor of hard work. She works so hard to be the best student she can be. That mentorship has come in handy lately.
My daughter, Elise. This young lady is the kindest and most thoughtful human I know. She is always thinking of others.
I have so many more. I will work on making a more comprehensive list. One thing that I would like to do is to send each one of those I personally identify as mentors in my life and write them a note of thanks for their mentorship.
