Melissa's "Last Lecture"
Reflection is starting to become an important part of my life. My kids are starting to spread their wings and head out into the world. I have spouted plenty of advise, counsel and personal insight to my children over the years. It has been interesting to watch and see if any of it has been worthwhile or helpful. I think that what I would want to share here is some of what I have poured my heart into over the years sharing with those most dear to me -- my children. I will do it by answering the questions below:
If you had one final lecture to share with a group of students on what you have learned from this course, what would you share?
Lesson 1 for my children: Some of the things that I have learned from this course that will stick with me are that success = using what I have to I lift and help others. What I do in my life will be worthwhile if I am working to seek out those in need and do what I can to help them. I have been given so much and blessed beyond anything I deserve. I know that the Lord has given me all that I have so that I can use it to lift those around me.
What would be your last bit of advice to someone wanting to begin the entrepreneur journey?
Lesson 2 for my children: Work hard and be honest. Those two things are critical and key for success in life. If you are willing to work hard every day and to always live with integrity, you will be able to meet and exceed your goals.
What words of advice, direction, or caution would you give him or her if you had only one chance to give your own last lecture?
Lesson 3 for my children: Give your whole heart to the love of your life. Once you choose your partner, never look back. Put your God, your family and country highest priority. Use hard work and honesty here too. No one ever reflects back on their lives and wishes they spent more time in the office. When you work to provide for your family, keep Christ at the center of your heart in all you do. Those are the most important things. The ideas, the organization, the desire to start a company... that all can be born out of these great character traits. Working from the inside out works better.
What advice would you now give someone else if you had the chance to mentor them?
I hope to have to opportunity to mentor many people in my family. I hope to be able to bear witness and testimony of the great lessons that I have learned. I love my family more than anything. If I could, I would pour it out of my heart and give it right to them. But it is like the parable of the Ten Virgins. No matter how much I want to share my oil, they have to acquire it themselves. If they will allow me any mentoring opportunities, then I will teach them the things I mentioned before. I will always work to live the principles of hard work, honesty, and service in my life to exemplify the Savior. I will always try to be the best example I can of putting the Savior at the center. Be there for each other. Always be there for each other. I will always be here too.
